Girls can’t play football.
Girls aren’t tough.
Girls shouldn’t be interested in trains.
Women can’t drive properly.
Video games are for men.
Women can’t be engineers.
Women should cover up if they don’t want to be harassed by men….

How does reading all of that make you feel? Pretty pissed off, right? And so it should because it’s all nonsense and is part of this ridiculously sexist world that we live in where women are constantly told that they are not quite good enough. By men mostly but also sadly sometimes by women.

Although I don’t imagine there is anyone here who would agree with all of that I’m pretty sure that most of you who live in the online entrepreneur would have nodded along to one of these statements

Women can’t sell the same way that men can
Women are too nice in business
Women can’t make decisions as well as men can

And do you know, that’s just as sexist as saying that girls shouldn’t play football. And it pisses me off.

Some of my very favourite mentors perpetuate this myth by telling funny stories about how women can’t sell properly. Showing the difference between how women and men sell. Suggesting that women as a whole can’t sell their own products.

Some of my very favourite entrepreneurs confirm this myth by talking about how they find sales sleazy and think that its something that they have to learn, to go against their natural “woman-ness” to be able to do.

Bullshit.

Anyone can sell. The fact that you are a man or a woman has NOTHING to do with it. Like anything else it is a skill that you need to learn. Your sex is irrelevant.

It’s OK to be scared of selling.
It’s OK to admit that you don’t know how to sell successfully but you know what is NOT OK?
It’s not OK to be told or to believe that you can’t sell because you are a woman.

The online entrepreneur world is full of people who will tell you that you can learn to sell without selling, that selling is a masculine energy and that sales is for tough people who don’t give a shit about what they are selling.

I can’t begin to tell you how WRONG WRONG WRONG this all is.
Anyone that tries to tell you how to sell without selling is talking shit.

Anyone that tries to tell you that you can’t sell properly because you are a woman is talking shit.

Anyone that tries to tell you that in order to sell you have to bully your customer into handing over their money is talking shit.

If you are big enough and brave enough to run your own business then you are big enough and brave enough to learn how to sell properly. That’s the bottom line for me.

So if you believe that women can’t sell because they are women then I suggest you go and get a job working for someone else because if you’re going to survive in this entrepreneurial world then you damn well need to believe that you can do anything.

Women can play football, video games, drive cars, be tough, have an interest in trains, work as engineers, wear what the hell they like and be good at sales.

FACT
