Kids! As much as I love my 4 they have the knack of bringing me down to earth with seemingly little effort.
I always thought that I was setting them a great example by working for myself, by not claiming benefits or leaving them with childminders all hours of the day. I thought that the fact that I am there in the school playground twice a day, that I go to EVERY school assembly there is and that I am able to drive them around to various after school clubs and friends houses counted for something.
And I know my older children see and appreciate it.
The younger ones though? Its just normal for them. There is nothing new about the fact that I’m always there, as far as they can remember I always have been.
I was filling in my 5 year olds baby book this week that she found and wanted to take into school but being the 4th baby it is a little more, erm - sparse than the older kids books. When it asked the question what did baby do in her first few weeks I wrote this :
“Mum went back to work when Reid was 4 weeks old and she came into the office every day. She was our office mascot, along with Fishy Rascal the goldfish”
And its true, I had the magazine business then and she came in every day with me. It was bloody hard work (4 children, the other 3 at school, post natal depression, a failing business, an unsupportive husband) but it was all good, you do what you’ve got to do - right?.
So, anyway - last month my 8yo was asked at school what her mum and dad did for work and she told her teacher “Mum sits on Facebook and twitter all day”
Not quite the glowing entrepreneurial social media consultant review I was hoping for! Thanks kid….
