Marketing plans sound boring, don’t they? Who needs a plan, that’s not why you got into business on your own is it? You started this business to have fun, to enjoy your time, to be able to do what you want when you want and answer to nobody, didn’t you?
Well that’s all well and good and yes, some businesses can be really successful like that. But 99% of super successful businesses will have a whole lot of plans. Marketing plans, business plans, launch plans etc. Now these documents don’t have to be complicated, far from it. In a way the more simple you can keep them the more likely you will be to actually follow them.
That’s why my business plan fits on one page. If I was about to go to a bank and ask for a big loan then I would need to change this to fit into the template that they required, but as I run my business without finance the business plan I have is perfect for me.
The same can be said for your marketing plan. The most important things about marketing your business are these :
1 - you understand everything that is on the plan
2 - you are committed to making it happen
3 - you have included daily, weekly and monthly actions
4 - your goals are clearly stated
5 - your method of measuring your goals is clearly stated
If you don’t feel that all of these are accurate then you probably need to think about outsourcing your marketing.
Consistency is so important with marketing, especially digital marketing. You need to be able to commit to a certain level of sharing and promoting and being seen online, whether this is daily, weekly, monthly or less frequently. Whatever you choose needs to be practical and doable for you because there is nothing worse than starting to blog weekly and then disappearing for 3 months and posting nothing.
If you have a marketing plan that clearly states what your goal is, what actions you’re going to take to reach that goal, how you are going to check in on your actions and what you’re going to do when you reach your goals then that is brilliant. It is that simple. That’s all you need to do.
If you don’t? Then you won’t know where you are. You’ll spend hours every day on Facebook and achieve nothing. You’ll become frustrated and bitter and your business won’t grow. Not a great option really.
